Musical Taste

As this is my first EVER blog, please bear with me if it's lacking in some of the finer qualities that some of you may be used to. Cheers

It seems that nowadays, one of the very first questions one person asks another when they first meet is what kind of music they are interested in. Why is this? Surely we as the human race have come further than needing to base our decisions about our acquaintances than what kind of music they listen to in their spare time.

Yes, I do realise that one can learn a lot about a person just from what genre they are listening to but this is not necessarily always the case. I have friends who listen to Reggae but this in no way reflects upon them that they smoke marijuana even though that is a stereotype that is often associated with this type of music just due to one dread locked Jamaican individual.

Perhaps it is a benefit to have discussions with different people about all sorts of music to broaden your own musical horizons but one should never be judged on their idea of what is "good" music. Every different genre deserves equal credit and time to be appreciated. Some people may exclaim that jazz is "better" than electronica just because it is an opinion and great misconception that it takes longer to master but I know from my own personal relationships with DJs and jazz musicians that mastering DJ decks take just as much work and skill as mastering the saxophone.

So next time you meet someone new don't immediately try to decipher their personality based on some snap judgment and stereotype, get to know them first and then discuss in detail your different tastes. You may be surprised and discover some new and alien form of music that you fall in love with.
